Federal Law on Firearms for Felons
Federal law prohibits the ownership of a firearm for felons or anyone subject to a domestic violence restraining order. The legislation was put into place in order to ban firearms for individuals convicted of a “misdemeanor crime of domestic violence”. Congress states that the bill was passed with unanimous support because, “anyone who attempts or threatens violence against a loved one has demonstrated that he or she poses unacceptable risk and should be prohibited from possessing firearms.” If you are convicted of certain crimes, you could lose your Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.
